Natural Pesticides – Is a new era in the food industry beginning
Syngenta, an agrochemical company, also announced that it was researching natural pesticides to fill this gap in demand.
Natural Pesticides – Is a new era in the food industry beginning?
Chemical pesticides have been an accepted part of the global food industry for many years. Since its introduction by Monsanto in the 1970s, agricultural products treated with glyphosate (a pesticide) have helped increase the global food supply. On the other hand, concerns caused by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NSBI) study reports on glyphosate revealing the links of glyphosate with cancer and its residues accumulating in air, water and soil have increased the pressure of governments to find alternatives to this chemical. As a result, the use of this chemical can be completely prohibited.
France and Germany plan to ban all glyphosate use by 2021 and 2023, and other countries are expected to follow suit. Given the fact that many of these brands are in the process of developing natural alternatives but remain in the testing phase, collective bans have the potential to negatively impact the agricultural community and crop supply earlier than we anticipated.
There are a limited number of natural pesticide alternatives that food producers can use against insects, weeds, nematodes and diseases. This shows that there is a serious growth opportunity in the natural pesticide market.
Of course, while alternatives are being investigated, there are already natural products on the market. One of them is a variety of natural pesticides derived from Mustard seed. It is stated that these natural pesticides are science-based biological solutions that can replace synthetic chemicals used in high-value crops such as fruits, vegetables and tobacco.
